For Those Who Can't Sleep On Hip Hop

What is Hip Hop?

November 5, 2009

You can’t be Hip Hop by wearing iced out grillz. Hip Hop won’t be found in a Bently or an Aston Martin. Wearing brand names like Ecko, Coogi, Roca Wear, LRG, or Sean Jean won’t make you anymore Hip Hop than LL Cool J’s new clothing line which is exclusively available at Sears (who by the way, own K-Mart). Lingo, slang, swagger, jewelry, playing Def Jam’s new Icon video game, or even spitting game (rapping) won’t make you legit. So called “Hip Hop heads” rely on corporate entities to tell them what to buy, how to act, and what to do to be Hip Hop. Most don’t understand this, but they’re taking cues from businessmen in three-piece suites in conference rooms in midtown Manhattan to tell them how to dress, act, drive, and listen to in order to be Hip Hop. Regardless of what advertisers or even your friends tell you, this is not and will never be Hip Hop.

What is Hip Hop?

I’ll let Dondi White tell you. You’ll notice he never even says the words (Hip Hop), but he was a living, breathing, example of what that is. He wasn’t a rapper, a DJ, or a mogul, but he was Hip Hop.
