Your record has gained some attention; tell me about yourself and what aspires you as an emcee to reach out to different regions?

ML-    Whenever I hear any success my record is getting I am like d*mn, cause I be working labor jobs.  It doesn’t even seem real!  I was a mover for about a year but now I am done with that.

Word, So where are you out of, and what are you about then?

ML- I am just your average Joe putting in my hours and trying to survive.

The average Joe just doesn’t do songs with R.A the Rugged Man. How did it all happen for you?

ML-    You never know, you never know what might come your way.  My man Tim over at Gravel Records asked me who I would like to get for the record and said that he could possible get R.A, and I was like man that would work perfect.  We went into the studio with him and he was cool as hell.

What makes your music?

ML- What’s making my music isn’t a lot of hip hop right now. I don’t listen to a lot of rap. I have been listening to a lot of classic rock. You name it, anyone for the ‘60s and ‘70s like Hendrix, Janis Joplin, newer rock like the Chili Peppers, and a new group out of Ohio called the Black Keys that are banging hot!

Instead of rap why don’t you lean towards making that type of music?

ML-    I have been thinking about it, getting a band and doing a white Roots type of gig. I would be real interested in that sh*t, it’s just not in the budget.

How did you get hooked up with Gravel Records?

ML-    My boy Rusty that was part of Family Jewels once upon a time he had signed with Gravel and I was stuck in a contract situation over with the Molemen. They weren’t trying to let me go, so Tim from Gravel came through and bought me out of that contract.

What were you doing with Molemen?

ML-    Nothing!  They weren’t recording me not giving me no beats, it was a f*ck up situation and I am so glad that Tim got me out.

I have heard about Molemen, but I really don’t know much about them.  They are from Chicago too?

ML-    Yea. Juice, Rhymefest, they all part of that.  For me I am trying to get out of this underground sector spotlight.  There’s a lot of haters out here trying to get at the same crumb.  There really isn’t a hip hop scene out here. Of course you have the big names like Kayne and Common, but they from the south side. The north side isn’t getting any love, all my family and every body, I f*ck with is from the north side of Chicago. It’s all about the south right now.

How do you feel about the two underground labels that you’ve been on? That you have had no success with one and some success with the other

ML-    I can’t really speak for the labels I have been on, but comparing the two I would say that I was really excited at first when I got signed to Molemen because those are the cats that I grew up listening too. It was my first deal and when it didn’t materialized to anything it really became f*cked up.  To tell you the truth, music is a huge part of my life so when everything was on hold it really messed with me.  Then when I got on Gravel Records and met Tim, he told me I could do what ever I wanted. He’s getting me cameos that I wanted and letting me be free. It was so much better

You’re getting mad love out here in Colorado so keep up the good work.

ML-    It’s crazy man, I am just a regular dude working my jobs. When they tell me that I have been charted or have some write ups, it feels good that I have some fans out there!
