Insomniac Magazine Mourns Larry Smith

Famed producer, Larry Smith, passed away at the age of 63. If the name doesn’t sound familiar, you definitely heard his work. Jimmy Spicer’s “Money(Dollar Bill Y’all),” Kurtis Blow’s “The Breaks,” Run-DMC’s “Sucker MCs”, “It’s Like That,” “King Of Rock” along with Whodini’s “Friends,” “Freaks Come Out At Night” & “Five Minutes Of Funk” were just a few of the songs he created. In fact, Larry was truly THE SOUND of early 80’s Hip Hop. Instead of using session musicians, Larry pioneered the use of drum machines & launched the raw minimalistic style that was so popular at the time. Larry’s final days were spent in a nursing home after suffering a stroke…but he will always remain alive and healthy through his music.
