Review: GOODboy Galexie – “Climbing With Success”

It seems that every month record labels, publicists & street teams are touting a new artist as the next big thing in Hip Hop. As expected, those so-called lyricists rarely live up to the hype. That makes it especially exciting when we come across someone as phenomenally talented as GOODboy Music’s GOODboy Galexie. An emcee of his caliber rises high above the sea of disposable rappers and shows all competitors what Hip Hop is truly about with his powerful mixtape, “Climbing With Success.”

“Introlada” sets the tone with Galexie igniting a soulful sample with his lightning-fast flow. His clear, articulate, and masterful lyrical execution is a refreshing change of pace from the mumble-mouthed rappers currently riding the charts. Galexie’s skills are evident with his intricate choices of phrasing and rhythm. He may proclaim himself a “lost soul walking ’round in your alley ways,” but his all-knowing delivery proves otherwise. “Spinal Fluid” is next up, as the track delivers SERIOUS funk grooves that Galexie easily swerves and cascades around, with lines like “Yo, this rap stuff too easy/ ‘sees me/ ripping up a track/ spit sick bars/ get queasy/an’ I ain’t even finished yet/so salute/ my rap style is militant.” After you catch your breath from that banger, Galexie slows down the pace a bit with a track entitled “Jive Turtle” that sounds like the supreme spitter is traveling to another dimension in a rocket ship. Come to think of it, with talent this otherworldly, that assessment may not be too far off. “Pretty Penny” allows Galexie to drop reflective lyrics over a smooth track with an even smoother chorus while “Traps” finds the emcee verbally flexing over a DJ Premier breakbeat that sounds like it was intentionally crafted with Galexie’s unique cadence in mind.

“Sanctions” is a dark, foreboding cut that showcases a menacing, hypnotic persona listeners weren’t exposed to on previous tracks. It exposes Galexie’s diverse range and indicates that despite the numerous musical gems we’ve received at this point, he’s still holding back valuable cards in his deck. ‘Gotta keep ’em guessing. Well played, indeed! The following track, “11:32,” is a brilliant piece of sonic craftsmanship. Three emcees with three VERY distinct styles…all in the same group. The GOODboy Music crew(also consisting of GOODboy iQue & GOODboy Theory)rip the soul-fueled cut to shreds. Every lyric…Every verse…Every punchline connects! They are such a powerful unit that it would go beyond being a missed opportunity if the collective only planned this as a one-off. They MUST release a group album. The public demands it! “Blinded” provides a downbeat yet fulfilling cut about changing the world and the constant struggle each man must endure while “Problems & Proverbs” calls out weak rappers(“Where the real spitters at?”)over a spare, driving beat. Classic boom bap!

“Stellar Estrella” gives fans a cool introduction to ODOOG while “Who Got the Juice” does the same for another one of Galexie’s partners-in-rhyme, Trae Suave. All the talent involved showcases above average flows, but Galexie predictably registers the most presence on the mic. “Outroluda” sends listeners off on a jazzy note, revealing Galexie voicing his frustrations & wondering if he’s truly connecting with his intended audience. The lyricist should never doubt his rapport with fans. “Climbing With Success” is a triumph & the incredible music he brings to listeners will never be forgotten.
