Chicago’s Jelani Lateef returns to the scene with a powerful new mixtape titled “Cold Days and Dark Nights.” If the title sounds familiar it’s because the project is a sonic sequel to his 2015 album of the same name. Last time around, the emcee used sound bytes from Will Smith’s film, “The Pursuit Of Happyness,” to kick off the proceedings. After a rousing lyrical workout on the “Cold Days Intro,” he effectively taps into words of wisdom from the actor/rapper once again before hitting listeners with “No Fear.” The soulful cut reinforces Jelani’s commitment to his craft & DREAMS, which happens to be the title of the following track. With a catchy, sped up chorus & hard-hitting beats, Jelani details his past struggles and battles of depression that threatened to derail his goals. “Look What You Done,” (which was included on the album)will put listeners in a wistful, romantic state of mind while “Stay Strong”(with Fiyah Wayne)picks up the pace with triumphant production and a positive message. “In God’s Hands” is another Fiyah Wayne featured extravaganza that stresses the importance of staying on a righteous path to make it through life’s trials & tribulations. Even when giving into the darkness, Jelani realizes that only God can make the final judgement on his soul. “How It Feels” is another callback to the album (that sounds just as good the second time around) with its infectious sample of Biggie’s “Everyday Struggle” while “Day At A Time” shifts the tone of what’s come before with more upbeat production.

“One Life One Chance” is a funky gem that finds the lyricist focused on achieving his goals. Jelani puts time & effort into his art to show his daughter that he’s a winner! “Action” adds a welcome return to the past as the emcee “keeps the faith” that things in life will get better before a trio of remixes for “Flashback,” “Forward Advance” & “Can’t Stop Now” invade our speakers. Of the three, Joe Tyse’s re-working of “Flashback” stands out the most for it’s subdued trance-like rhythms. “Keep Looking” perfectly wraps up the collection as Jelani boldly flows over a track that utilizes a sample of Sade’s “Stronger Than Pride” album highlight. The “Cold Days and Dark Nights” mixtape is further proof that Jelani Lateef possesses the skills & talent to take over the industry. With his overwhelming drive & persistence it’s only a matter of time before he reaches the top.
