ADLM-FRESH ASSOCIATION SPHIRE PRODUCTIONS
ADLM (AfterDinnerLiquidMints) are most certainly not your average Rap Collective. Seemingly having a overriding desire to sidestep rap clichés & desperately avoid being pigeonholed with the rest of the Hip-Hop fraternity, “Fresh Association” is a nervous balancing of bridging the gap between cutting edge Cali hip-hop, NY’s lyrical aggression , glitchy IDM, coupled with Avant-garde beats & sounds. The group consists of emcees, Jube, Bubb, the TightRope Walkers Crew, Ex-I (of Thunderhut) and the Sphire Bros., handling the substantially angular rhythms. This is their second release with the “Experimint LP” being their first.
As I stated before, “FA” is a fusing of ‘Company Flow’ styled erratic beats, with the electronica noises of “Aphex Twin / Squarepusher” & a smattering of effects, not too dissimilar to “Boards of Canada”. Those that tire of listening to Hip-Hop that feels like a series of endless chest beating, with booming bass, would do well to give this extraordinary LP, more than a quick glance. This is not the typical garbage that crosses over these days. The opener “Fresh Association” manages to work a heavily sampled industrialized shriek (???), into the fray with edgy almost stuttering beats working against each other, before quickly turning course and thereby switching into computer Data Processing-like effects. The emcees think nothing of it when rhyming on top of all these confrontational sounds, and it certainly catches your attention. So raw, you can feel every line and snare and subliminal interjection.
Rhymes are dense, rapidly delivered vocal sketches, which are intentionally obtuse, abrasive and confrontational, and yet reward those that are prepared to concentrate on what’s being said. There are no wasted words as ADLM deliver their commentary on social issues and battle rhymes in the form of their fluid and fast flows over sick calculated production. Those that are familiar with the ‘Underground / Leftfield’ Hip-Hop scene will find much to enjoy here because, its electronic aspirations will just as likely appeal to those that don’t usually like traditional Hip-Hop.
Mind blowing tracks include:
“Relative Reality”
“Lepers, Pirates, Serpents”
“Get Home”
And the hidden track “RazorBlade DeathSticks”, featuring lyrical juggernauts Immortal Technique and Mac Lethal!
There hasn’t been another album in hip hop that compares with this. ADLM are the sound of hip-hop’s future, and you can hear it before the rest of the world catches up. The different styles of both the producers and emcees are diverse, so each song has a different sound to it while maintaining that dopeness. “Fresh Association” is a breath of “Fresh” air. Pure fire!
