Album Review: Finale’s “62”

Earlier this year Finale announced to his fans that new music was on the way. A few singles, some guest drops later, the Detroit emcee surprised everyone with the cover art for his brand new project. The reveal wasn’t part of some social media campaign, but that’s what made it both exciting and genuine. Finale isn’t one to mince words and will quickly challenge other emcees to be accountable for their craft urging them to drop the gimmicks along with all the other BS and just rap. It’s that kind of energy that separates the real from the hobbyist, it’s the difference between those about action vs those that are just all talk. Bar for bar, Finale is about his business whether it’s on the stage or in the booth.

His latest album 62 embodies that very spirit. Laced with beats by Mark Cooper, Beat Fanatics Slopfunkdust & Sponatola, Apollo Brown, Jon Rogers, and Tensei,  the production is solid as each track meshes well with one another. The project also includes a feature from Illa J and Cleveland P. Jones.

What’s special about this album is that Finale defines what it is to “rap” not once, but twice. Let me break that down a little further, he’s not just spitting lyrics, he’s engaging in a conversation with the listener on a personal level. It’s like someone says “let me holler at y’all for a minute.” I’m talking about those real moment conversations where the music hits through the speakers so much that you leave the entire album on repeat to soak it all in. I had to stop myself from rewinding a track, especially when it struck a cord, but that’s the mark of a great album that’s worth the wait from start to finish. -Lorenzo Gee

“Find the fight inside yourself to finish whatever war you start while knowing allies can be enemies and even the hero gets fed up ….. every shot you take eventually hits a target and good or bad there’s always a lesson in every outcome … learn that sh*t” Thank You ………… #62.”
