Musical Statesman and “King of The Blues”
BB King: The Life of Riley is a powerful documentary, which shows the origin of the legend we now know as the “King of the Blues”. Born into poverty and a segregated Mississippi, King went on to become a true music statesman and revered music legend. As a child, King literally worked in the cotton fields’ sun up till sun down – but even the ruthlessness of segregation and a Jim Crow South could not stifle the dreams of a young kid who just wanted to play his music for the world. This documentary shows the obstacles and the struggles BB King faced while making his journey from a little town in Mississippi to literally around the world, meeting with heads of states, the Pope and royalty. I would dare say, his journey was befitting for a true King, BB King that is!
Filled with first person accounts from other music legends and Hollywood notables, BB King: The Life of Riley is definitely a journey worth experiencing. Besides the great music of BB King, this story shows the determination of a young man who had a vision and was not about to let anything or anyone divert him from his plans. In this documentary, you will learn about his connection with the other King, Dr. Martin Luther King… In his own words, hear BB King talk about how he came up with the name “Lucille” for his guitar. Also, learn why he went fishing in a silk suit!
With an uncompromising work ethic, BB King was bound to be the legend that he is today. Most legends are not appreciated when they are alive, so it’s good to see Mr. BB King getting his props now. He influenced a lot of artist even to this day. Some of the biggest music entertainers are in this documentary singing the praises of BB King. He will forever be known as “King of the Blues”. This documentary is highly recommended, not just for the great music, but for the inspirational story of a young African American boy who rose up from a racist environment to become a worldwide icon and musical genius. BB King: The Life of Riley is a great film worth seeing. This is not just for music fans, but this film is for anyone who wants to understand the back story of how BB King became the icon that he is today.
I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. BB King at the 50th Anniversary of the Music Business Association convention (formerly National Association of Recording Merchandisers) in 2008 (San Francisco) when he appeared to receive the Chairman’s Award For Sustained Creative Achievements. It was indeed a pleasure to meet such an icon and true gentleman!
