Ever since Soulsonic’s Force’s “Planet Rock” first entranced music fans years ago, the Roland TR 808 has been a staple in genres that extend well beyond Hip Hop. From House to Jungle, and further into the trenches of music, this analogue drum machine known as the Rhythm Composer continues to enrich beats around the globe. Even if you don’t think you know an 808 from Oberheim DMX, you certainly know the former’s sound. The iconic low bass, snappy snares and distinctive cowbells are essentials for any contemporary music producer’s toolbox decades after the machine’s foray into recording studios during the early ’80s. Although today’s virtual sound libraries feature the 808’s instruments making it possible to enjoy the sonic boom without actually owning this piece of equipment, the decades old beat box remains a highly coveted prize amongst beat aficionados the world over. At last, experts and fans can now revel in the story of a dance floor heavyweight.
As an extra slice of sonic delight, here’s a Youtube clip featuring the TR 808 on a track every lover of soul knows.
