Hip Hop Review: UFO Fev and DJ J Hart – “Emigres” EP

Emigres Hip Hop EP

In the ever evolving scene of Hip Hop, some emcees and producers opt to stick to a certain style, focusing on perfecting that niche. They often get a mixed response if they try something different, so understandably, switching up can be a gamble. One emcee who is willing to take the risk is East Harlem’s own UFO Fev, who just dropped his latest EP, “Emigres.” The title and cover art is primarily based on the project’s sole producer, DJ J Hart’s journey of leaving his native Paris, to pursue Hip Hop in the heart of New York. The 7 track project boasts diverse beat schemes for the charismatic Fev to showcase his high grade bar game.

Starting off with “Emigres En El Barrio,” this is a soulful soundscape as Fev reflects on his tough upbringing and the lessons learned through different relationships in his life. He took some losses but learned from them and stayed focused despite the obstacles he had to overcome.

“They claim friends but left stains all on the glass/If I go my daughter had a hell of a dad/I owe no man, my word is all I ever really had.”

On “Flow Thug & Harmony” the emcee lets it be known who his music is for over a slower paced beat. The momentum picks back up on “Running It” which has a more commercial appeal, and you’ll literally want to run this up while driving with the windows rolled down. This is the anthem of a true hustler in the game. On “Big U.F.O.” Fev exudes confidence as he proves through his rhymes why he’s someone to look out for. “Mr. Officer” was the highlight for me as Fev bodied the infectious backdrop with an energetic cadence and highly entertaining, flamboyant wordplay.

Things mellow down with a jazzy vibe as you get drawn into the storytelling of “Jilly from Philly”. The most unique sound in terms of production is “Sunrise,” the last track, featuring guest appearances from CJ Fly, Red Inf and Zandra Kaye.

One notable aspect is the variety J Hart was able to construct musically. Fev has an amazing voice and his delivery is exceptional. I  had no idea what to expect, and each time I went into the next song, I was pleasantly surprised. The EP’s first visual is out now for Flow Thug & Harmony. You can check out all UFO Fev projects via bandcamp, while vinyl pre-orders can be placed for “Emigres” through Tuff Kong Records. -Hipnotik1
