During the early to mid-nineties, a radio scene that once introduced the world to a sound rich in culture and sonic diversity, began to consistently become increasingly predictable by hashing out a short stack of selections from a stable of well-funded corporations. This homogenization was counteracted by a small, but impactful group of pioneers who chose to revive the tradition of breaking the uncharted and inspiring from beneath the surface. This uplifting approach to Hip Hop radio, absent of the typical politics that seemed inherent within the medium, was a product of programs such as Kevin Keith and The Dirty Dozen on WNWK, Hardcore RIghteousness with Kwame Vear on WHCR, and Thermal Soundwaves with C. Truth Born on WHCS. These, and a few others, brought an alternative perspective and sound to New York airwaves.
Two decades later, C. Truth’s program maintains its integrity as “The Natural Alternative to Fast Food Radio.” Having moved over to WHCR years ago, Thermal Soundwaves also gained an additional host, Kev Lawrence. Every Monday night from midnight to 3 am, the two Hip Hop knights hold court in Harlem by dishing out a thought-provoking discussion, entertaining and insightful interviews and quality Hip Hop music.
Their latest venture includes a compilation entitled, “Taken: Timeless Beat Jackers” featuring a slew of talented emcees.
