Insomniac Magazine’s Weekly Hip Hop Top Ten 6/1/20

Don’t Sleep On These New Hip Hop Releases

As everyone gears up to go back outside, Insomniac Magazine gives you 10 great reasons to stay in! Check out the stellar steez on the latest Hip Hop countdown below! And, beyond everything else, be safe and keep your head up.

1) We’ve had plenty of delicious dishes in our lifetime but FREDDIE GIBBS & ALCHEMIST’s mouthwatering platter of “Alfredo” is simply put…one of the best! Every great chef knows that the preparation is just as important as the meal itself which is why Al sprinkles the track with ominous rhythms, gritty beats, and a hefty serving of BENNY THE BUTCHER! On “Frank Lucas,” the mic phenomenons rip rhymes like it’s their last day on earth & they only have 4 minutes left before the bomb hits! They don’t expect everybody to feel it but that’s where they’re wrong. Gibbs & Benny caught the world’s attention & we won’t stop listening ’til the planet explodes!

2) BODYBAGBEN x M.O.P. blow up buildings & bumrush the set on a nuclear level explosive called “Lord Body!” Ben pulls out all the stops then tosses in the kitchen sink to ensure this track is as high-powered as possible…and of course, the crew don’t disappoint! LIL FAME & BILLY DANZE shatter the booth with a savage ferocity. Debris is scattered all throughout the room while the competition’s left picking up the pieces.

3) PASSPORT RAV delivered the perfect combo of intelligent, no-holds-barred wordplay and supreme production (supplied by TRAC-QAEDA) on the “Black Conspiracist” EP! The Intro prepares you for the daunting journey ahead with a menacing soundscape and Kevlar coated rhymes that will linger in your mind long after the track is over. If you’ve been living in a blissful dream world thinking everything’s okay, Rav will wake ya ass up with a dose of reality!

4) CA$ABLANCA & BANISH HABITUAL flip the “Kill Switch” on all hostile forces that threaten their underground reign! CLYPTO heats up the boards with a sonic backdrop that triggers a live wire vibe of pure electricity! The lyricists sizzle on the mic. Step to ’em & it’s murder on sight!

5) ROME STREETZ & ESTEE NACK help you reach your “Higher Self” on a SEBB BASH crafted sonic heater. Instead of forcefully pulling you in, the track slowly eases up on you from behind & taps you on the shoulder. Smart move. The understated approach is exactly what’s needed to keep us engaged. Rome offers a calm, soothing strategy to showcase his wise observations of life while Nacky Chan back slaps us across the face for not paying attention. Both tactics work extremely well. That Yin & Yang takes the cut to a higher plane.

6) When you hear those exotic rhythms & ill ass rhymes it means the CERTAIN.ONES are in your town! DALI, BOBBY CRAVES, and CHAMPUS MAXIMUS bring the “Duck Sauce” to the table for a new BLACMAV laced sonic feast! The lyrical superstars are addicted to spittin’ so toss your menu on the floor & join the cypher. “This is worldwide distribution, there is no ear pollution.” May your Won Ton soup runneth over with wondrous wordplay!

7) PRYME PROLIFIK delivers on his promise of “making it epic” on a sweeping CLYPTO & CASTLE MONEY BEATS crafted gem called “Severance!” The power spitter sounds like he’s having the time of his life as he cascades over the lush samples carefully conjured by the esteemed production masters. This joint FEELS like summertime. Open the fire hydrants and welcome the sun!

8) MEPH LUCIANO brings the sacred smoke on a powerhouse GRANT4ORE laced production called “Palo Santo!” The banger possesses mystical rhythms & an 80’s styled synth soundscape that’s brilliantly merged with a boom bap backdrop. Meph drops stream of consciousness bars that contribute to the trippy ambiance & transport us to a place where space & time cease to exist.

9) If DJ PRESERVATION’s aim was to make our fragile minds explode from the amount of dope tracks delivered on the “Eastern Medicine, Western Illness” album then…MISSION ACCOMPLISHED. Utilizing the remaining fragments of our brain matter, we painstakingly selected one cut from the project & chose YOUR OLD DROOG x MACH-HOMMY’s slow roll sizzler “Correspondence!” Y.O.D. “stays on his game like assistant principals” with a bold, self-assured mic showcase. He then passes the torch to Mach who drops unhinged bars of lyrical insanity as Preservation heals us with holistic sonic heat!

10) FREDDIE GIBBS x ALCHEMIST can do no wrong so we’re ridin’ out with the TYLER, THE CREATOR featured mega gem “Something To Rap About!” Because of Tyler’s over-the-top persona, many people overlook the fact that the kid can actually rhyme! The former Odd Future frontman follows Freddie’s acrobatic flow with breezy bars that are so immaculately delivered that they’ll make your head spin. The lyrical showcase is presented over sublime sonic supremacy that make us feel like everything’s gonna be alright (even as the world burns down around us). Turn up the volume & listen. When Alchemist is behind the boards global destruction seems like a minor inconvenience.

Well that’s it for this week. Catch ya next time and…DON’T SLEEP!
