Trap music is often associated with violent, drug-fueled imagery that offers no redemptive qualities. While many rappers predictably “play up” the subgenre’s negative aspects, a rising artist from Washington, DC has taken it upon himself to “flip the script” & spark a radical change. King Gheno creates vivid soundscapes he calls “Brain Train Music” that are sprinkled with upbeat affirmations of abundance and success. His latest singles, “Plan In Motion” & “Fighting For The Light,” possess all the musical “bells & whistles” that correspond with the club-ready compositions…but they are also perfect representations of his positive mindset.
On “Fighting For The Light,” listeners are commanded to “focus on the mission” & “put the power in your hands” while “Plan In Motion” finds the rapper detailing his hard work ethic over a tribal beat that will draw fans to the dancefloor. The lyrics are a welcome upgrade from the onslaught of coke & molly references usually showcased on these type of tracks. King Gheno fights the good fight and leads an auto-tuned attack on the dark content that threatens to destroy both the music industry & the minds of the youth. If you’re into hardcore hip hop this isn’t for you. But if you’re a trap music fan definitely give these songs a spin!
