Review: Mav x Hobgoblin – “Angelz and Demonz” EP

Mav of Da Cloth released his latest offering, an EP called “Angelz and Demonz.” Entirely produced by Hobgoblin, the six tracks are packed with dark subject matter delivered in heavy verbal execution style. It was a great follow up to drop after Mav’s “Abracadabra” project with Finn. There are two guest appearances, one from Rigz and the other from Estee Nack, while Mav holds down the rest on his own. Also, the artwork cover is an amazing aesthetic that represents the theme and concept of the project.

Mav gets straight to it with the first track, “Resume,” which is dark on the beat and heavy on the bars. He then had Rigz join in for “Kill a Man” where they both brutally body the track over a sinister soundcsape.  I love the way the sample was flipped on “Half Empty” as Mav gets deep, reflecting on some past situations. Next up, is the first single off the project, “Shark Week” featuring Estee Nack who drops a high grade, energetic verse and appears in the accompanying music video. Although it’s the shortest joint, “Ricochet” is still loaded with hardcore rhyme spitting, followed by the closing track “Voicemail,” featuring introspective lines, including: “Devil on my shoulder and a Angel too/You can’t imagine the sh*t that these two done made me do/Prayed before and after I done made a move/The angel said when the gates open I’ll help you make it through.”

Mav is always ready to unload a full clip whenever he gets on the mic. He’s a veteran at what he does and his lyrical tactics are deadly. Hobgoblin has been popping up everywhere, from his Martyr Musik EP with Jamil Honesty, to producing a few tracks on Chong Wizard’s “The Infinity Stone” series. Angelz and Demonz was mixed by Farma Beats and mastered by Midnite Beats. CD copies will be available via bandcamp and nineorbetta.com, with cassettes to follow through Loretta Records. -Hipnotik1
