Review: N.ave – “Black Magic” (EP)

Philly rhyme powerhouse N.ave examines his public and private persona on a transformative 4 track opus highlighting progression & change. The lyricist sets the stage with a T. Nayah featured gem called “Dead Roses” that simmers along while reveling in a sea of reflection. Although N.ave powers forward with a stream of braggadocious bars that magnify his strength & optimism, the song’s hook(“the roses are dead/let’s not pretend…”)indicates a much harsher reality. Instead of stepping up, the artist is actually running away from problems in a relationship. Apparently the kind that can’t be fixed. N.ave’s lifestyle can advance. His status can improve. But the woman he once loved won’t be around to see it. “Gravity”(ft. IDK)delivers a triumphant soundscape that finds the emcee detailing the many ways he’s perceived by those around him. Some see him as an “Oreo”…some look at him as a “killer.” Women who said he was ugly now view him as the most charming & handsome man in the room. N.ave just rolls with the punches and comes out on top.

The NOSHADOWBEATS produced “Dosumdiffrint” contains a psychedelic vibe that complements the spitter’s off-kilter mental state. His relationship is quickly fracturing and the non-stop smoking & drinking are only making things worse. The problems are so bad that he can’t even sleep. But N.ave promises to do something different despite his inner demons compelling him to do more of the same. The title track “Black Magic”(City Of Dreams)unearths the layers of corruption associated with our most celebrated government officials & public figures. They are held to a higher standard but fall prey to the same temptations that lure us all. N.ave navigates listeners through the dark subject matter while applying a little “Black Magic” to shield us from harm. He opens our eyes to the changes we must make in order to survive and skillfully documents them with precision and care.
