Review: RPxSB – “Creatures”(Acts I – III) – Album

Roddy Picante & Stay Bizzy(aka RPxSB)transform a lifetime of trauma into a triple dose of audio excitement on their mega opus “Creatures”(Acts I – III). The San Francisco, CA based rising stars take the audience on a series of mood-altering misadventures that make you question the state of the world & your perception of reality. On “Act I: Things That Kill Me Inside,” listeners are presented with tracks like “Skyfall” and “Weather Patterns”(which perfectly describe the recurring ebb & flow of life). These cuts come across as apathetic introductions to an impending apocalypse where life is ultimately too grim to give a f**k. Just because they don’t care doesn’t mean the MCs can’t get funky….which is evident on tracks like “Caller ID” & the “Pan Dulce Interlude”(with its transcendent Nomadic crafted groove). “Mac Miller’s Message” is another standout for the song’s slinky arrangement & boasts of forthcoming fame while “Playzone” sounds like the duo’s gearing up for war! “Rat Race” finds the lyricists taking a moment to “feed their inner narcissist” over a bouncy soundscape before “Indie Playlists” wraps things up with fun rhymes(“she says she don’t date dudes below 5’11/I stand on my toes as I answer that question”)over a lush arrangement.

“Act II: Boar” begins with a clever doo wop meets trap construction called “Hometurf, KMEL” that is sprinkled with hilarious rhymes(“Used to want her phone numbers and a kiss/If she got kids I don’t exist”)that provide a nice lead-in to the bass-enhanced sizzler “Kevin Nash” and rapid-fire rhymes of “Greener Grass.” “Tap In” & “Pinky Cognac” deliver the yin yang effect of co-existing with hard & soft elements that propel the tracks forward while “Illest Mistake” triumphs with an infectious bassline & slick throwback vibes. “Fentanyl” transmits appropriately otherworldly instrumentation that makes for an easy segue way into the loopy “Twerkulator Sponsorship”(Faux Birthday)and twisted activity of “The Demon Hour.”

“Act III: JOPO” serves up “Bad Lemons” that are sweetly pleasing to the ear. The sour taste in their mouth is a result of boring people & annoying day jobs…but the duo conquer their woes by indulging in a drug-fueled excursion over an arrangement that would make Walt Disney proud. Nothing else sounds quite like it. And that’s why they’re in a league of their own! “Friday Night At Tootsies” contains a spacey, night time feel while “Bip City” is a straight up club banger! “Coast 2 Coast” brims with laid back west side styled production before the artists tear the roof off the sucker with “Sprinkler System!” As we start to wind down, “Mike Jones” transports us to soul-drenched, head nod heaven then ratchets up the heat on “Jaded” before bringing us back down to earth on “Slaughter House.” When the track ends, it dawns on us we’ve completed our sonic voyage. But the journey’s not over because RPxSB have PLENTY more to offer!
