Some thought “This Is It” was strictly an opportunity for AEG to capture revenue that would never be realized from Michael Jackson’s lost 50 dates. There’s no question that the company will reap a financial reward here, the movie has already grossed nearly $105 million worldwide in just 6 days. However, they are doing so because the product is good.
Director Kenny Ortega seized the moment and put forth a significantly impressive visual and audio documentation of a concert that will never be. This could have been a very bad exploitation piece; instead it will stand as a true testament to Jackson’s mastery as a performer– possibly the greatest ever to dominate a stage.
“This Is It” perfectly melds live rehearsal footage of Jackson, musicians, and dancers with high production value videos that were to be used within the stage show. Although the general public will never get to peer inside the true life of Jackson, “This Is It” provides a glimpse into his interaction with the crew. The film’s most impactful scenes show Jackson providing tips and musical direction to various performers. As well, his performances, although not his best, are still world class.
The music industry can learn a bit from Ortega’s film- put forth your best product and people will react accordingly.
