OG Hip Hop artist D. Brock DaLyrical debuts “Call Me Old” single and video. This is the first release in over a decade due to a stroke in 2009. But not even a stroke could keep Brock down or stagnant from his Golden Era of Hip Hop roots, and “Call Me Old” celebrates just that.
“This track was written primarily for Generation X”, says Brock, and addresses an era of mumble rappers who put out music with no substance.
During quarantine, Brock caught glimpse of yet another “Lil” rapper glorifying popping pills and getting high. It was at that moment when Brock decided it was time…He picked up some software and a drum machine and created “Call Me Old.”
The video takes place in a barbershop and Christian Academy (where 15-year old Brock 1st performed in 1985) and begins with a conversation suggesting today’s Hip Hop is better than old school. This sets the tone for Brock’s lyrical comeback. “A damn shame all you f*ckers sound da same / No original thoughts ever make it to your brains / Yeah, da industry’s da blame / they give a lil fame / but nearly half you motherf*ckers even got da same name / Lil dis lil dat / lil wick lil whack / Look, youngin, use some manners or you ’bout to get smacked / ‘n’ please stop trippin’ ’cause you don’t understand / ’bout to catch an a*s whippin’ from a grown-ass man.”
Although the track will most likely not be taken seriously by some youngin’s, authentic Hip Hop enthusiasts will appreciate Brock’s mastered wordplay that flows effortlessly over classic boom-bap cadences. The knocking bass with blends of cuts and scratches heightens Brock’s complicated relationship with Hip Hop along with his raw emotion. His final jab is a rewind antic, “I hope you hear me, youngin’, and pull your f*ucking pants up.”
