YL has returned with his 4th project entirely produced by Roper Williams. The pair keep the momentum going with this 6 track EP titled “feelin life.” I have yet to hear YL on anything other than his collaborations with Roper, but whatever they’re doing, it works, every single time. These are two young gentlemen who deliver vintage flavor with their craft. They’ve revamped a classic New York sound, while putting their own unique spin on it.
YL’s delivery is so smooth, it feels like he’s sharing elements of a hidden love story, mixed in with an ode to the streets that he grew up in. One of my favorites was “all good” because it was so soulful and reminded me of the oldies that many of us love to play on Sundays. On “small vacation” Roper’s production is subtle and delicate while YL kicks a laid back flow and wanting to make the best of time that you can’t get back. “distracted” had such a jazzy feel that made me envision a live street performance during an evening stroll on a beautiful night in the heart of NYC. The joint I enjoyed above all was “group therapy” in which YL unexpectedly switches up his tone and cadence, to the point where I didn’t know it was him.
In the future, I would like to hear YL on some features, however, his work with Roper has never left me disappointed. I wouldn’t push the envelope with the expectations, but having YL on someone else’s production or project would be a pleasant surprise. While listening to group therapy, I heard the potential YL has to showcase versatility that goes beyond his signature sound. Roper has collaborated with other artists and has more music outside of his collabs with YL. Head over to bandcamp to check out both Roper’s previous catalog as well as the digital version of feelin life. -Hipnotik1
